Artist's Comment

Helene sits calmly in the turbulent Carina Nebula. The nebula acts as a metaphor. Carina is Latin for the keel of a ship. Like the keel of a ship, Helene holds steady on CARE's course. She is surrounded by her ongoing concerns: Hunger, Relief for Victims of Natural Disasters and Wars, and Care's current campaigns: Maternal Mortality, the Education of Girls, Women's Savings & Loans Assoc., Global Warming and HIV/AIDS.The box with the CARE logo is a metaphor for the organizations giving. Originally "CARE Packages"  were parcels of food sent to Europe for relief or comfort of people left hungry after WWII.

From those original CARE packages grew a powerful movement to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice.

Named one of Foreign Policy magazine's "Top 100 Global Thinkers," she is enabled by her capacity to work long hours, travel nearly constantly, and still be gracious, optimistic and focused on social activism.

Thanks to CARE for permission to incorporate their photos in creation of the painting. Photographers are: Josh Estey, Phil Borges, Ibraheem Abu Mustafa, Shaul Shwartz, Evelyn Hockstein and Nathan Butler.

A Hubblesite photo of the star forming region of the Carina Nebula was the inspiration for the painting's background.

Note: even more recently the Carina Nebula was chosen as one of the first three images taken by the James Webb telescope.

Facts

The Carina constellation is located in the southern sky. Its name means "the keel" (of a ship) in Latin. It used to be part of the much larger constellation, Argo Navis. Which represented the stern section of Argos, the legendary ship that transported Jason and the Argonauts on their quest to capture the Golden Fleece.
