Helene Gayle, Investing in Women

Artist's Comment

Helene sits calmly in the turbulent Carina Nebula. Carina is Latin for the keel of a ship. Like the keel of a ship, Helene holds steady on CARE's course. She is surrounded by her ongoing concerns: Hunger, Relief for Victims of Natural Disasters and Wars, and Care's current campaigns: Maternal Mortality, the Education of Girls, Women's Savings & Loans Assoc., Global Warming and HIV/AIDS.

Named one of Foreign Policy magazine's "Top 100 Global Thinkers," she is enabled by her capacity to work long hours, travel nearly constantly, and still be gracious, optimistic and focused on social activism.

Facts

The Carina constellation is located in the southern sky. Its name means "the keel" (keel of a ship) in Latin. Carina used to be part of the much larger constellation Argo Navis. Which represented the stern section of the Argos, the legendary ship that transported Jason and the Argonauts on their quest to capture the Golden Fleece.
